Desiertos – Deserts en/at the Goodman Theatre

The 5th Latino Theatre Festival is a biennial event that has introduced more than 20,000 Chicagoans to prominent Latino theater companies around the globe and transforms the Goodman into a hub of international artistic exchange; productions by local, national and international theater artists, plus a variety of events—workshops, master classes, panel discussions and post-show live music by local bands—define the experience. Goodman Resident Artistic Associate and Festival Curator Henry Godinez drew inspiration for this summer’s lineup from two milestone events—the centennial of the Mexican Revolution and bicentennial of Mexico’s independence. In addition, Teatro Buendía, one of Cuba’s most celebrated independent theater companies, makes its U.S. debut.

Mexican playwright Hugo Alfredo Hinojosa’s mysterious, dream-like play Deserts interweaves the stories of illegal immigrants to take a bold look at the violence and poverty along the U.S./Mexico border. Through the stories of a mother and child, undocumented workers, and snipers and preachers, the strength of the human spirit emerges from a struggle for survival.
